Ghost Controls Gate Motor Replacement: The Prosper Owner’s Guide

If your Ghost Controls gate opener quit mid-swing or started grinding on startup, the motor is usually the culprit. We replace Ghost Controls gate motors in Prosper for $420-$780 installed, depending on your exact model and whether the arm needs replacing along with it. Most replacements happen same day if we have your part on the truck, which we usually do for Ghost Controls swing and slide models. The giveaway is almost always the same: the gate moves slower than it used to, then slower, then stops responding entirely after a hard rain or a cold snap.

What happens next matters. Some shops will tell you the whole opener is shot and sell you a full system. Unless your control board is fried or the housing is cracked through, that’s a motor swap, not a system replacement. Hal Gatewood started this shop in 2001 so Prosper homeowners had someone who’d say the true thing instead of the profitable thing. If your motor is bad, we replace the motor. If it’s not the motor, we’ll show you what it actually is.

One thing before you read on: Gatewood Fence & Gate is an independent repair shop. We are not affiliated with Ghost Controls, and we don’t pretend to be. We know their product line well, we stock compatible parts, and we install them so they work like they’re supposed to.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

The Ghost Controls lineup breaks into three families: the GTS (single swing gate), GTD (dual swing gate), and GSL (slide gate) series. Within each family, the motor part number starts with either AXP or ABBT, and the difference matters. An AXP motor from a GTS system won’t bolt into a GTD carrier without re-drilling the mount plate, and we see that attempted more often than we’d like. The GSL slide gate motor is a completely different assembly, with a belt-drive gearbox that doesn’t interchange with either swing model at all.

The fastest way to identify your motor is to open the cover and look for the label on the gear housing. It’ll show the series, the voltage (12V or 24V), and a date code. Once you have that, matching the replacement is straightforward. If the label is faded or torn off, we can identify it by the motor’s physical measurements and the arm’s mounting pattern when we’re at your gate.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Ghost Controls still sells OEM motors for most models made since 2015, and we quote both options. For older GTS units, the OEM motor is often backordered for weeks, so we stock quality aftermarket equivalents that match the torque and RPM specs. We tell you the difference in price and expected lifespan before you decide. We don’t make that call silently just to save ourselves a phone call.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • Gate moves in jerks or stutters on startup. The motor brushes are wearing down, so you’re getting inconsistent contact and power delivery. This is the earliest warning sign and the cheapest time to fix it.
  • Opener trips the breaker or blows a fuse after rain. Water intrusion has reached the motor windings. In Prosper’s clay-heavy soil, moisture wicks into the housing through the wire conduit, and once it reaches the stator it’s a matter of time.
  • Motor hums but the gate won’t move. The capacitor or start winding has failed. The control board is sending power, and the motor is trying to start, but it can’t generate enough torque to move the arm.
  • Gate runs slower every week and now struggles to finish open or close. Motor torque has degraded, usually from internal heat damage or a worn gear reduction set. When the motor has to work harder each cycle, it’s cooking itself the rest of the way.
  • Burning smell from the opener housing. The winding insulation is overheating, and that smell is the varnish on the copper wire. Turn the opener off at the breaker and call us. Running it more gets you a fire, not a gate.

These usually happen in sequence, not all at once. The jerking starts first, then the humming, then the trips. If you catch it early, sometimes a capacitor or brush service buys you another couple years. More often, once the brushes are gone the commutator is scored, and a rebuild costs more than a replacement motor.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Ghost Controls gate motor replacement in Prosper, figure $420 to $780 for the complete job. The range comes down to three things: model series, whether the arm comes with the motor or separately, and OEM versus aftermarket parts. A GTS single swing motor with an aftermarket equivalent lands at the lower end. A GSL slide motor with the OEM part and a new drive belt is at the top.

What You’re Paying For Typical Range
Ghost Controls-compatible replacement motor (aftermarket) $180-$310
OEM Ghost Controls motor, when available $290-$460
Labor, on-site installation and setup $180-$260
Full arm replacement, if needed $90-$220

The price we quote before starting is the price you pay. We don’t tack on a “discovered issue” surcharge when we’re already at the gate. If the arm is stuck and the motor stripped its gear, we show you the stripped gear and tell you what the extra part costs before we touch a wrench. Every motor replacement carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t right in the first three months, one call brings us back at no charge to you. That’s not a slogan. It’s on the invoice.

Prosper homeowners with a senior or veteran in the household take 10% off the whole job, and any repair over $200 gets $40 off before we start. We don’t make you ask for it. It’s our standing offer because these are our neighbors, not a sales quota.

DIY or Call Us?

Ghost Controls gate motors run on 12V or 24V DC, so you’re not playing with line voltage at the motor itself. That makes this one of the safer gate parts to work around. You can check the basics safely: make sure the opener’s disconnect lever hasn’t been pulled, test the battery if you have a battery backup, and look at the control board for a blinking diagnostic light that tells you what failed. The Ghost Controls manual actually has a decent troubleshooting section for that part.

Where DIY goes wrong is in the swap itself. The motor bolts to a gear carrier inside the housing, and if the drive pinion isn’t meshed right, the new motor eats itself in a month. You also have to reset the close-travel limits after any motor change, and if you get those wrong, the gate either slams shut on a car or sits open all night. And here’s the plain-safety part: a gate that slams is a gate that can break an arm or a windshield. If you wouldn’t rebuild the motor on your own truck, call somebody who does this every week for a living.

If you’re in Prosper and the opener is acting up, call (979) 291-0947. We’ll come look at it, tell you honestly if it’s a $95 sensor or a $500 motor, and do the job the same day if the part’s on the truck. No trip charge inside the county. Hand me your number and I’ll call you before I pull up, that way you’re not standing in the driveway waiting on me.
