Elite Gate Motor Replacement: The Prosper Owner’s Guide

If your Elite gate motor has stopped responding, is grinding, or trips its breaker every time it moves, the fix is usually a motor replacement, not a whole new gate. We stock Elite-compatible motors on the truck and install them for $450 to $950 in Prosper, depending on your model and whether it’s a swing or slide gate. Most replacements are done same day, because the part itself rarely takes more than an hour and a half once the gate is opened up.

Call (979) 291-0947

The way most people discover the motor is dead is pretty unceremonious. The gate worked fine on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning it hums for two seconds and quits, or it just sits there while the remote clicks. Sometimes the opener will keep trying and throw an error code, but the arm or chain won’t budge. By the time we get the call, somebody’s already pulled the manual release and is propping the gate open with a cinder block. That’s fine for a day. It’s not a security plan.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite makes two main lines that show up on Prosper properties: the SL series for slide gates and the CSW series for swing gates. The SL-3000 and CSW-200 are the two we see most often in places like Gentle Creek and Windsong Ranch, where the lots are wide enough for a full slide or a heavy ornamental swing. The CSW-200UL and its cousins run on 24VDC and usually fail at the capacitor or the gearbox, not the motor windings themselves. The SL-3000 is a workhorse, but the internal limit switches wear out faster than people expect.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that matters: many Elite models share the same motor shell but not the same drive sprocket or mounting plate. A motor pulled from an SL-3000 will not simply drop into an older Elite Mirage or an SL-2000 without swapping the gear reduction and re-drilling the mount. We’ve had homeowners order a used motor online, bolt it up, and then wonder why the gate travels six inches and stops. The part number on the motor label is only half the story; the control board revision matters too.

OEM Elite motors are fine and we install them when that’s what the job calls for. But there are quality aftermarket equivalents, particularly from US Automatic-compatible suppliers, that cost thirty percent less and outlast the OEM on Texas sun exposure. The difference is in the winding insulation and the bearing seals. We keep both options on the truck and will tell you honestly which one makes sense for your gate. Gatewood Fence & Gate is independent, by the way. We are not affiliated with Elite. We just fix their stuff every week.

Signs Your Elite Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the start capacitor has given out, which is common after five or six Texas summers. The motor is getting power but can’t get the shaft spinning.
  • The gate pauses mid-travel and reverses. An Elite motor draws more amperage when the bearings are going bad or the gearbox is running dry. The control board reads that spike as an obstruction and backs the gate off.
  • The opener throws an error code and locks out. Elite boards are conservative. A failing motor will show as ERR2 or a flashing limit light long before the motor dies completely. That’s the board protecting itself.
  • You smell hot plastic or electrical burning near the motor housing. That’s winding insulation breaking down. It only gets worse, and no, it won’t fix itself with a little time off.
  • The gate moves at half speed or sounds like it’s laboring. Low voltage is one culprit, but a motor with worn brushes or a dragging rotor sounds exactly like that too. The difference is easy to diagnose with a meter.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Prosper, an Elite gate motor replacement runs from about $450 on the low end for a single swing arm motor replacement to around $950 for a full slide gate motor swap with new limit switches and drive chain adjustment. The spread comes down to which model you have, whether we’re replacing the motor only or the motor and the gearbox together, and how much corrosion we’re dealing with on the mounting hardware.

Every quote we give includes the part, the labor, the trip to your property, the reprogramming of your remotes and keypads, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. The price you hear over the phone or see in writing before we start is the price on the invoice. We don’t hand you a “discovery surcharge” after the gate’s in pieces. Hal Gatewood has been doing this since 2001 and the name on the shop matches the guy in your driveway.

We also knock $40 off any repair over $200, we don’t charge a trip fee inside the county, and seniors and veterans get 10% off permanently. You don’t have to ask for the discount twice. It’s just the way the shop runs.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before picking up the phone. Make sure the breaker for the gate didn’t trip. Confirm the manual release lever isn’t dangling in the disengaged position. Look at the motor housing for obvious damage or a blown capacitor that’s swollen and leaking. Those checks take five minutes and might save you a service call.

What you should not do is open the motor housing and start poking at capacitors with a screwdriver. These units run on 24VDC but the capacitors inside still hold a charge that will knock you on your back. And if you get the wiring wrong on reassembly, the gate can travel in the wrong direction, crush a limit switch, and turn a $500 motor replacement into a $1,400 control board plus motor job. We’ve cleaned up enough of those to say it plainly: call us at (979) 291-0947 before the screwdriver comes out.
