Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Prosper Owner’s Guide

A Linear keypad or intercom that has quit on you is usually a $140 to $320 repair in Prosper, and that includes the part, the wiring check, and the labor to put it in. We stock the common Linear keypad boards, keypads, and intercom modules on the truck, along with the solder-sealed connectors Linear uses, so most of these jobs wrap up in a single visit. The giveaway is almost always the same: the keypad works sometimes, or the intercom crackles like a bad AM station, or the whole unit just sits there dark while the gate keeps moving fine. When the gate itself opens and closes without complaint from the remote or the loop, but the keypad will not take a code, you are looking at a part that has lived its life.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

This covers the Linear access control units you actually see bolted to the gooseneck or the brick column in Prosper: the AE-100, AE-200, AE-500, and AE-1000 keypads, the AM-KP wireless keypads, and the older AK-11 and AK-15 units that are still out there on gates that went in during the 2000s building boom. If you flip the faceplate or look on the board, Linear stamps the model number in white lettering, and that number is the only thing standing between you and the wrong replacement. A lot of folks buy a generic keypad off a shelf and find the wiring harness does not land where the old one did, because Linear switched from screw terminals to a plug-in connector around 2012 and nobody told the big-box aisle.

Gatewood Fence & Gate is an independent local shop; we are not affiliated with Linear. But we have been putting Linear boards in gates around Prosper since before half of these subdivisions were paved, so when we say the OEM board is worth the extra thirty bucks over the knockoff, it is because the knockoff has a membrane that dries out in two Texas summers and leaves you standing at the gate with a code that does nothing.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

  • Keypad works only after you warm it up. In the winter, the membrane on older Linear keypads gets stiff, and a button that works at noon stops registering at 7 a.m. That is not your imagination. It is the contact pad underneath hardening with age.
  • Intercom buzzes constantly or picks up the gate motor’s hum. The shielded wire from the intercom to the controller picks up interference when the jacket cracks, and once moisture reaches the shield, you hear the motor’s brush noise right through the speaker. We see this on Prosper gates that face the afternoon sun, because the south-side conduit bakes harder than the rest.
  • One or two buttons quit, but the rest act normal. A single dead button on any Linear keypad is usually a cracked trace on the circuit board or a failing membrane cell, not a programming issue. Reprogramming it will not bring it back.
  • The gate opens from the remote but ignores the keypad completely. The keypad relay or the board that talks to the controller is dead. If both remotes still work and the loop still works, the problem is inside the keypad housing.
  • The intercom works fine at the house but not at the gate, or vice versa. This is a wiring problem most of the time: a spliced pair that has corroded, a connection that has pulled loose in the box, or a cable a fence contractor nicked with a post-hole auger and buried without repairing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Linear keypad replacement in Prosper, the installed price typically runs between $140 and $220 on an AE-series hardwired unit, and $180 to $320 when you are replacing an intercom board or a wireless keypad receiver module. The spread is driven by which generation of Linear you have, whether the wiring runs through an existing conduit or we have to pull a new run to the house or controller, and whether you want the OEM board or a quality aftermarket equivalent. You get the price on paper before we touch a screwdriver.

Every repair includes the wiring check, the programming, and the new part, and all of it is covered under our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. Here is the honest way to think about it: if the old board lasted eight or nine years, the replacement is not an expense, it is the next decade of the gate working the way it is supposed to.

Repair Type Prosper Price Range What You Get
AE-series keypad swap (wired) $140 - $220 installed New Linear keypad, relay check, programming
Wireless keypad + receiver module $180 - $280 installed New keypad and receiver, range test, programming
Intercom board or unit replacement $220 - $320 installed New board, shield wire replacement if needed, audio test

DIY or Call Us?

You can check the obvious things before you call me: make sure the breaker for the gate controller is not tripped, make sure the keypad code still works on a second keypad or the remote, and look at the faceplate for cracks or water beads. If the unit has visible moisture inside or the feed wire is nicked where the lawn crew ran over it, do not open the enclosure any further; the board sits close to 12 or 24 volts, and a wet board with a cracked jacket can short when you are holding it. That is the part where a lot of Prosper homeowners call us and say the keypad was working until they took the cover off.

Realistically, a Linear keypad that has failed did not fail because the board was lonely. It failed because of time and heat and corrosion, and those never fix themselves. If you want it diagnosed properly and you want the part matched to the model, call me at (979) 291-0947 and tell me what the keypad is doing right now. I will tell you what I carry for it, and if I do not carry it, I will tell you that too.
